THE XXIII IPPNW WORLD CONGRESS

IPPNW is excited to announce that, after a delay of several years due to COVID, we will convene our first Congress in Africa in April 2023 in Mombasa, Kenya. The theme is Disarmament, Climate Crisis and Health. The coastal Kenyan city of Mombasa will provide a luxurious seaside backdrop to many of the IPPNW Congress activities, to be conducted at the Traveler’s Beach Hotel & Club. The main Congress will be three days, from 27-29 April, with other events to include a Student Congress on 26 April and IPPNW governance meetings on 26 and 30 April.

An active Kenya planning team led by IPPNW co-president Sally Ndung’u has been meeting to plan other activities, including a Bike Tour from Nairobi to Mombasa preceding the Congress. Participants in the Bike Tour will pedal for five days over nearly 500 km through a variety of landscapes, including a national wildlife park. In addition, we will be offering three post-congress tours of varying lengths, from two-five days, ranging from an island/marine park excursion in Mombasa to a full safari adventure (extra fees required.)
The Congress program will feature a range of African and international speakers. Sessions will highlight and link the health consequences of the climate crisis and nuclear weapons, especially as they relate to Africa, and within the context of other world events. They will include the topics of nuclear famine, energy choices, nuclear brinkmanship during war, climate and conflict and the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons. Each session will be organized to provide engagement opportunities to participants. A Youth Panel will emphasize how young health professionals and other young people can become involved in advocating for climate justice, nuclear weapons abolition, and a more peaceful and sustainable world.
We will offer a hybrid/virtual internet option for those who cannot attend the Congress in person.
